Chandrayaan-3’s Visionary Cameras: Navigating Lunar Terrain

Chandrayaan-3 mission is continuously hoisting the flag of success. The information sent by Vikram Lander just 4 days after landing is very encouraging. The lander has revealed some of the secrets of the lunar surface with the help of the Rover’s Navigation Camera, which is the biggest achievement for the space mission so far and is going to be a milestone.

This morning, Pragyan Rover took a picture of Vikram Lander. The Rover’s Navigation Camera (NavCam) captured the “image of the mission.” The Laboratory for Electro-Optics Systems (LEOS) is creating NavCams for the Chan drayaan-3 Mission.

These cameras can endure 50 megarad of radiation from space, therefore they can last far longer than typical cameras, which can break down under such circumstances. It can withstand very low temperatures thanks to the material and methods employed. We tested it in a vacuum at -200 degrees Celsius. When the sun rises again, we anticipate it to survive the night and come back to life.

These cameras serve as Pragyan’s eyes and let it to navigate the lunar surface while also taking and transmitting photographs. These navigation cameras’ data must be transferred to the ground in order to create a digital elevation model (DEM), which is required for every path planning.
